KLONDIKE DERBY
If you're new to Cub Scout Pack 150 or haven't been to a Klondike Derby yet, each Cub Scout pack in the BSA Carroll District (Carroll County) attends the Klondike Derby and runs their own ‘station.’ Since this event is for the entire Carroll District, it's HUGE - attendance typically approaches 800!
The event is held outdoors on a Saturday in January - rain, snow or shine. It is never cancelled for weather! As a result, all Cub Scouts (and adults) are required to dress properly and are inspected before admission. If anyone is not dressed properly they will be turned away! The Klondike Derby consists of a series of games, challenges and team building stations that each den visits in any order they want. Depending on time, they may not get to visit every station. Beads are collected from each event and dens with the most beads at the end of the day win an award. A maximum of five beads for each event may be earned, with one bead for a den cheer, one bead for a den flag, and up to three beads for the event itself (teamwork, event completion, etc. are factors). Dens with the most beads at each rank win a round of applause from everyone and a small prize at the end! Pack 150 chooses to have dens run specific events each year, and the Wolf den is in charge of planning and running the Klondike Derby. Our station is generally a big hit - the Sponge Bob sling shot! Hard mounted sling shots fire tennis balls at Angry Birds and a giant plywood Sponge Bob. It's great fun! |

2019 Klondike Derby
Despite parking challenges, the 2019 Carroll District Klondike Derby was a big success for Pack 150. Many thanks to the Wolf Den parents that assisted with preparation and execution of the Pack 150 Home Station and Spongebob Sling Shot. The amount of help we had this year was phenomenal and it showed!
Most importantly, our Cub Scouts had fun. The temperature didn’t make it above freezing but our Scouts were not deterred. The lack of wind made the day very comfortable if you were wearing some good layers. The activities were fun, the boys were excited and the day was one for the memory books! The Winfield Community Volunteer Fire Department had a station that included wearing a fireman's jacket and carrying a heavy tool, crawling through a tunnel, untangling a fire hose and carrying someone on a stretcher. Great fun for the boys!

A Carroll County Gold Prospecting club had a station in a tent that demonstrated how to pan for gold. There was plenty of historical information and educational material for adults, too. Definitely a good station and something a little different from the pack stations.

One station that's a big hit involves launching paint balls at a plywood zombie snow man....
That's not a sling shot... THIS is a sling shot!
Pack 150's Sponge Bob station always has a line, and you can see why. Even adults want to launch tennis balls at Sponge Bob! |

This station involved picking up a ball and putting it in a bucket and was tougher than it looks. The center is elastic and if anyone pulls too hard the ball slips through!

The ring toss is always a big hit, too!
